10 GOTO 10

Prelaunch is GO! So what does that mean?

I’ve launched the Captain Forever website. For $15 (USD) you can become a lifetime Captain Forever supporter, which gives you immediate access to the flash game. This is a single player, un-moddable, web based game. Of course, it might become more than a single player, un-moddable, web based game. This is where it gets fun. Becoming a supporter gives you access to future versions of the game as well. I haven’t made these yet, which is why I consider this a pre-launch rather than a launch proper. It’s also why I’m discounting the price from $20 down to $15. When I release the first extra-awesome version of the game it’ll only be available to supporters. I’ll make the original version available to non-supporters, but the supporter fee will go back to $20.

So… do you want in? I’m going to assume you’re interested, otherwise you would have stopped reading. To better inform your decision I present these two options:

Support Captain Forever Later

This is a good choice because:

  • Your computer may be too puny to run the game, but if you wait for the free release you can use it to learn this crushing truth without having to pay anything.
  • You might not like the game. Again, waiting to play the free version will help you figure this out.
  • I may get hit by a falling satellite, and thus never release any premium content.

Support Captain Forever Now

This is a good choice because:

  • You’ll get to play Captain Forever now while it’s still obscure and cool.
  • I am fuelled by your love.
  • It’s $5 cheaper.

103 Comments » for Captain Forever, you are GO for Prelaunch
  1. Stephen S. says:

    Sweet! I’m in!
    Except… o_O I only have $11 right now.
    Sad, I know…

  2. mark says:

I’ll have to sleep on it, but it looks great so there is a good chance I’ll get it.

    Good luck on it!

  3. Andrew says:

Guys, as a supporter, all I can say is get this game. It’s not to deep, but I found myself screaming at the screen things like: “You want some of that? Oh yeah, you like that. Oh crap, purple. Run run run run run OH GOD. I’M DOWN TO ONE PIECE. AHHHHHHHHH” It’s a great time killer, and with then expansions it’s going to be well worth the 15$. Plus you can support an upcoming indie. Awesome, right?

  4. Bood_War says:

I’m in the process of buying it.

  5. Farbs says:

@ Stephen – No need to hurry, it can wait.

    @mark & @Andrew – Thanks!

@Bood_War – Also thanks! Lemme know if you have any troubles with the payment/login stuff.

  6. Just bought it. The flash applet popped up a confirmation asking for access to my webcam and microphone though… Normally I always click Deny, but is there a reason that the game would want this access?

  7. Andrew says:

Not that I’ve seen. But yeah, going to bed now (I played it for a good 2 hours while waiting for ubuntu to install). Congrats on a successful launch farbs!

  8. Farbs says:

@Derek – There is a reason, but it’s debatable whether or not you’d consider it a _good_ reason :)

If you allow webcam access (and have a webcam, and have it selected as the flash camera device in the flash settings panel, and it’s pointing at your face) then you’ll see your own face reflected in the screen glare, rather than the default pilot face. It’s quite affecting to see your own grinning visage reflect the bright glare of an innocent trader’s demise.

  9. mark says:

Bought it as soon as I saw the note, it’s awesome, can’t wait to see what you’re making of this, and even now it’s actually pretty neat.

(I’d love to have a missile like projectile :D)

  10. Adam says:

Gonna have to get this later :D

  11. simo says:

man, where do I play the free version? I dont understand your website

  12. Andrew says:

@simo – Pretty sure the free version comes out much later.

  13. Captain Whenever says:

    gigantically impressed. Though very untalented.

  14. Andrew says:

Yeah, happened to me too. Try removing some of the last characters was the fix I think he said to me.

  15. Bill S. says:

Nope, doesn’t seem to work :( Mah ship is gone…

  16. Andrew says:

I’ve learned that there’s no point in trying to save, seeing as how my rounds only last about 15 mins a piece. It did give me the idea of a website where users can share their ships though…

  17. Bill S. says:

I’d really like to just collect a lot of parts and be able to try different combinations of the same parts…

  18. Westmark says:

Yeah i’d also really like to see an improvement to the xport thingy, seems to break quite often. :) but very addicting game :) luv it :P

  19. Farbs says:

@mark – I’ll try to get missiles into the next game.

@Bill S. – There does seem to be a bug in this system. I’m looking into it now. Andrew’s right that you can crop a few characters from the url to get it to work, but in your case I think it’s removing a lot of your ship. I found this works: http://www.captainforever.com/captainforever.php?cfe=nqlbqdb3lppw22jnqw11n2peehn2ra2lrrwa2zocxvjbn1s2gt2ra5mmhwd
Anyhow, I’ll see if I can figure out the problem.

  20. Vince says:

So, is this available for Mac? Like, now? If it is, I’m in.

  21. Farbs says:

It’s flash/web based, so yep it runs on Mac. I’ve had one Mac user suffer a bit of weirdness with the game, but it works for him most of the time. No other complaints yet.

Still trying to figure out the export bug…

  22. Bood_War says:

Well, I’m wasn’t able to purchsae a supportship. (I’ts not anything to do yith your paypal account, so dont worry) The person who was supposed to pay me couldn’t. I’ll hopefully have it sometime this week though.

  23. aA says:

    I <3 Captain Forever.

As a rad starcontrol 2 style multiplayer game it would be epicly amazing.

  24. Bill S. says:

Farbs – High scores would be nice.. I just got done blasting for like a half hour and had a ridiculous rainbow-ey ship, and then died from a stray blast to the command module… I want some stats!

    Awesome game BTW.

  25. Farbs says:

Stats would be great, you’re right. I’m going to have to figure out how to split my time between support and extra features for CF, and building the next game.

  26. Andrew says:

I wouldn’t worry about creating the new game for a little while. If I were you, I would keep making new content as fast as possible for the people who have bought it, so that they feel like they’re getting their money’s worth. You said it yourself: “I want this to be a game where you come back every day or so and there will be something new.”

  27. Bill S. says:

    Here are a few ideas:

    1. Stats (I already said this)
    2. Powerups
    3. Ship tester (Sandbox mode)
    4. Time Trial mode (X minutes to get as high score as possible)
    5. Strafing AI
    6. Multiplayer (Whoa.)

  28. Andrew says:

    7. Dynamic Content that other players made. Ala. Spore.
    8. Scripting interface (I doubt you could really do this without taking it out of flash, but the game would take off if you did manage to implement this).
    9. Client (I love clients).

  29. Farbs says:

Thanks for the comments, suggestions and support everyone!

I’ve uploaded a new build with the export system fixed. I already knew what the awful clanging sounds were, and I intended to fix them as a low priority task. What I didn’t realize was the game initialization was failing because too many clanging sounds were playing! Anyhow, it’s fixed now so we can all take Bill’s ship for a spin. It’s pretty awesome.

  30. Andrew says:

@Westmark: By just holding down spacebar for a little while I was able to make it to while :P

  31. Westmark says:

    @Andrew: hehe ;)

But d*mn those enforcers at the end are tough… I almost die instant :S

  32. Westmark says:

haha got to wanted level “????????”

@Andrew: what do the star thingy that that floats in on the main module do?

  33. Bill S. says:

@Westmark you just gotta get two of them to destroy each other, then swoop in and grab the parts quick…

Farbs, sometimes I see ships fire diagonal shots, but I haven’t been able to figure out how to do that… How does that work?

  34. Bood_War says:

Haha I just got CF and man, I’m loving it! I’ve only managed to get to 3 asterisks so far.

  35. Westmark says:

    when i wrote @Andrew i meant @Farbs :S sorry for the confusion

  36. Andrew says:

@Westmark: What stars are you referring to? I know you didn’t mean it for me, but I still don’t get what you’re talking about. Want to take a screenshot?

  37. Bill S. says:

    Holy crap the export works!

    <3!!!!!!!!!!

  38. Westmark says:

@Andrew: i’ll take a srennshot once i get to that part again :)but it’s right when you go from the enforcer wanted level to wanted level: “??????” then there is a colorful star/ray thingy that zooms in on your command module.

  39. Bood_War says:

    Hmm, we need ramming weapons.

  40. Westmark says:

@Andrew: It seams i can’t submit any ships?

  41. Andrew says:

    Whats the problem exactly?

  42. Andrew says:

It worked for me when I tested it (of course, it always does)

  43. Westmark says:

    @Andrew: oh sorry… it says 1 to 10 hours :P didn’t notice :P

  44. Andrew says:

Yeah, because I’m still working on the script to make it automatic. One sec, let me do yours.

  45. Andrew says:

Actually @westmark, I need the html, not just the link. I want to be able to show the ship on the page, not just a link.

  46. Andrew says:

And it turns out that I can’t export other peoples ships. Which is why YOU need to resend it with the HTML export.
