I didn’t quit my job | Farbs.org

Homeless game developers

That’s one word shy of an incredible heading. How cool would I be if I’d actually quit my job?
I wish my boss was a jerk. Then I could have etched “I QUIT” into his monitor. I could have spat my resignation in his face, literally, in morse code. My job is quite cool though, and my boss is a lovely person. Unfortunately, while I love making small games, my employer makes big games. Whatever could I do?

Today I applied for extended leave without pay. It’s a fumble in a fantastic yet frightening direction. I estimate an 80% increase in my personal game development productivity, which should raise my blog posts per year to… some. Up from none. I’ll start by posting tales of my Epic Journey of Minimalist Game Development, then flip back to announcing games once this employment business is dealt with.

I’m not going to tell you what games to expect, but I will tell you this: You’re going to need more pants.

Hey, I sent you an email a while back giving the suggestion that you should start selling your games. You replyed by saying that your current job wouldn’t allow that to happen. Assuming this is the same job, will this “extended leave” enable you to make a profit from your wonderful creations? I think that if you just advertised a little more, then you could be hugely popular.

PS: Sorry for spelling mistakes, the school computers don’t have spell check.

Hi Andrew, how’s it going? Are you still using Pycap?

You’re right – the goal was to turn my “hobby” projects into a full time job. I’m very excited about it! Unfortunately my leave application was rejected, but there’s still hope. I’ll post more about this in three days.

    Three days.

Oh, that’s to bad, but I’m looking forward to the next exciting segment of this existing chapter of your life. As for pycap, no, I’m not really using it to much anymore, as I had to take a visual basic class for my school for a semester, and it’s not easy trying to learn two different programming languages at once. Not only that, but I also formed a sort of short film studio thing with my friends, and that’s taken up a lot of my time as well.

But good luck with the job situation, I can’t wait to see more from you!

Oh man, no edit button? Pfft. I meant to say exciting.

Hm, 2k were responsible for Bioshock, right? I really enjoyed that game. I can’t say I have played indie games a whole lot – but if you had the skills to be working for one of the big companies, you must have the goods to go it on your own. Good luck!
