I am not making a 3D episode of Captain Forever. I have not modelled any of the modules using SketchUp, designed a super nerdy 6 DOF control system, planned the technology base, or even given a thought to multiplayer. I couldn’t possibly have time for this given Captain Jameson’s frighteningly proximous deadline.
Perhaps I’ll think about it later.

Warning! Warning! 3D Ship Approaching.
Prepare for imminent backlog explosion :P
looks awesome, just like my other favorite things that aren’t happening right now (AI, aliens, Matrix-style learning, etc.)
Regardless of if it is happening or not, looks pretty rad.
Weird, I was just wondering about how a 3D installment might play out. And I must say, that conept looks cool.
I wonder if you’d be able to quickly rearrange your ship after taking damage to make a quick escape, though…
3d is cool and im sure a lot of cool stuff could be done with it but i think further refinement in 2d would be more rewarding for everyone, especially if 2d got the multiplayer.
..and i jizzed in my pants.
“I wonder if you’d be able to quickly rearrange your ship after taking damage to make a quick escape, though”
Flex-time. Make the “time” rate scale with the zoom. Zoomed 10x-out = full speed, zoomed all the way in = 1/10.
Would rule out multi-player, though.
Farbs. NO. Dont do this now. Finish jameson.
You know, after looking at that concept for a while, I think I’d like it better if the colors were brighter. Though I suppose that might obscure the view of anything that is covered up by other parts even further.
Also, I am curious to know how the camera would be handled in a 3D Captain Forever game; the player would pretty much need full control in order to build and rearrange their ship effectively… But you also would need the mouse. Perhaps a bounding box based system? Seems like that might be slow.
…If only this were a WiiWare game…
I’m really not sure either way about the idea of a 3D CF game; I do know I want to have sex with that picture though.
I would definitely play a 3d CF game
Jesus christ! next thing you’ll know, a CF game based on GROUND BATTLES!
It’ll almost be like mechwarrior!
But i agree with Vaconcovat, CAPTAIN JAMESON BEFORE CAPTAIN DIMENSION (I thought of that name!)
Looks awesome, don’t do it.
Heheh, yes Jameson is definitely first, and may (or may not) get a few expansions before I move on to anything else.
I’d actually rather like to try a CF game with gravity. The gameplay would be a bit like Thrust. In 3D it’d be a lot like the original helicopter implementation in the Battlefield 1942 mod Desert Combat, which was impossible at first but incredibly satisfying once you got your head around it.
I want a helicopter.
dumb question, you are not using pycap for the 3d demo there are you?
Heh, no. There is no demo, and even if there were I doubt I’d use PyCap. It’s really not built for 3D.
Gravity in space can be… tricky as a gameplay mechanic, especially when you factor combat in. My solution to this problem has always just been to make the gravity relatively weak, and of course ignore the laws of physics and have friction (which of course is already in all CF games)
But things are complicated in threedee. Suddenly it’s much more difficult for the player to judge relative positions and speeds of planets and other objects, and that naturally makes managing gravity a little difficult.
Yeah, I think in either 2 or 3 dimensions it’s much easier to work in a constant gravitational field. If I were to add gravitation to a CF game I’d probably try to scale it such that there was a large falloff.
Your reminder about inertial dampening has given me a wonderful/terrible idea.
You should tell it to me so I can steal it :P
…God, I need to get back to work on Spacey Game. Haven’t touched the thing in many months… BTW, I am jealous of your bloom effect. Totally impossible in the language I code in… Unless perhaps I write my own custom draw code, but that’d be a huge pain. And resource heavy.
And I s’pose gravity would be workable if it had a rather limited area that it actually influenced. And having friction does effectively limit the distance from which gravity can effect you.
… It only thinks it’s happening.
I really can’t believe this is (isn’t) happening.
To be honest, i dont think the 3d will work well. Leave it as a simple (or complicated) 2d game, and you’ll see success. I would MUCH prefer multiplayer forever than 3d forever, IMO.
HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG IMAGE SAVED.
Now that i think about CF a little more, 3D isn’t going to be all that awesome. Multiplayer would, definitely, but not 3D. Though multiplayer would be a tad bit hard to implement though, What would the goal of the players be? How will they be able to get parts (As well as how to avoid fights over who gets the part)? How can they export their designs? Will there be a lobby? Will there be different types of CF Game modes? How will it go with the storyline? These questions will only be answered AFTER you finish Jameson!
looks cool, but the only thing is that how would you do 3rd person piloting in a 3d environment? what if you couldn’t see around ur own ship?
Hah, I just read your tweet about inertial dampening.
Yeah, I’ve played around with a frictionless space shooter. Turns out it is not as cool an idea as it sounds like it might be.
Farbs says: “Your reminder about inertial dampening has given me a wonderful/terrible idea.”
I thought you looked at turning off friction before and you said that was a disater, maybe you should make it just an option in the menu for a hardcore mode?
besides lack of friction wouldn’t be so tricky with gravity and maybe a few objects with friction like spaceship debrie, gas clounds and maybe even planetary atmospheres?
Captain Forever with gravity is a nice idea … *g*
I’ve got a rough prototype of “Gunship Forever” running under Silverlight using Farseer Physics ;).
Project is dormant for at least 1/2 year now … a lot of other work to do, but would like to see it realized.
Somehow I don’t see how ‘March (possibly April) 2011’ could be “frighteningly proximous.”
one of my friends and i thought of mixing Descent and captain forever.
we ended up just working on a java clone because one of our teachers suggested it. It had multiplayer, but i managed to break it.
